Pinochle is a trick-taking and melding game popular in the United States. The game is derived from a variation of Bezaique and was brought to America by German immigrants. The name 'Pinochle' is a misspelling of the french word 'binochle' which means 'eyeglasses' or 'Two-eyes', referring to the meld 'Pinochle' which consists of a queen and a jack. Allegedly this refers to the fact that the game was originally played with a deck of cards where the queen of spades and jack of diamonds were depicted in profile, together showing two eyes. There are multiple variations of Pinochle in existence, each with differing rules and traditions, but the one on this site is a single-deck four handed partnership Pinochle. Pinochle is played with 4 players and a deck of 48 cards. The cards have two copies of each card rank and suit of ace (high), tens, king, queen, jack, and nines (low). note that unlike standard card games in Pinochle the tens are a high card, and will outrank the kings, queens, and jacks in trick taking. A single round in Pinochle consists of 6 phases.

  2. Bidding
  3. Exchanging
  4. Melding
  5. Trick-taking
  6. Scoring

Dealing

Pinochle is played in partnerships, with partners sitting opposite each other at the table. The first dealer is chosen at random, but then dealership passes clockwise around the table. At the start of each round every player is dealt 12 cards. The player to the left of the dealer has first bid (see below).

Bidding

Once every player has been dealt 12 cards the auction begins. Here players bid the minimum number of points they believe their team can get during that round. The minimum bid is 250 points, and starts with the player to the left of the dealer. A player can either bid 10 or 20 points over the current bid, or pass. Once a player either passses or raises the bid the player on his left bids. A player that has passed on a bid is skipped and the player on his left bids instead. The last player not to pass wins the bid with the amount he last bid. If all players pass without bidding then the dealer makes the default bid of 250 points, and automatically wins the contract.

The winner of the bid has now won the right to:

  • Declare the trump of the round
  • Exchange 4 cards with his partner
  • Lead the first trick

Winning the auction

The player who won the auction must declare the trump for that round.

Next, the partner of the winning player must select and pass over exactly 4 cards from his hand to the winning player. The winner must then pass 4 cards back to his partner. There is no restriction on which cards are passed, but partners cannot communicate or consult with each other when selecting cards to pass. Passing cards is not optional, and each player must pass 4 cards. However the winning player can give back the cards his partner passed to him if he so chooses. The team that lost the auction cannot exchange any cards that round.

Melding

All players will form melds from their hand for points. There are three classes of melds. A single card can be part of multiple melds in different classes, but can only be a member of a single meld in a given class. For example a queen of hearts can be a member of a 'Hearts marriage' (Class 1 meld), and a member of 'Queens around' (Class 3 meld), but cannot also be a member of 'Run' (Class 1 meld) since it already appears in the hearts marriage. The points for the melds presented are tallied up and added to the score of that team for the round. The game will automatically form the highest scoring combination of melds from your hand and present those.

Valid Melds

The following are valid melds in Pinochle, and their respective point values:

Class 1 melds:
  • Run: Ten to Ace, all 5 cards in the current trump suit (H11 H12 H13 H10 H14). Worth 150 points.
  • Run + King: A run with an extra king in the trump suit. (H11 H12 H13 H13 H10 H14). Worth 190 points.
  • Run + Queen: A run with an extra queen in the trump suit. (H11 H12 H12 H13 H10 H14). Worth 190 points.
  • Run + Marriage: A run with an extra royal marriage. (H11 H12 H12 H13 H13 H10 H14). Worth 230 points.
  • Double run: Two runs in the trump suit. (H11 H11 H12 H12 H13 H13 H10 H10 H14 H14). Worth 1500 points.
  • Dix: The nine of a trump. (H9). Worth 10 points.
  • Royal marriage: King and queen of the trump suit. (H12 H13). Worth 40 points.
  • Common marriage (or [suit] marriage): King and queen out of trump. (S12 S13). Worth 20 points.
Class 2 melds:
  • Pinochle: Jack of diamonds and queen of spades. (D11 S12). Worth 40 points.
  • Double pinochle: Both jacks of diamonds and both queens of spades. (D11 D11 S12 S12). Worth 300 points.
Class 3 melds:
  • Aces around: One ace of each suit. (H14 S14 D14 C14). Worth 100 points.
  • Aces abound: All 8 aces. (H14 H14 S14 S14 D14 D14 C14 C14). Worth 1000 points.
  • Kings around: One king of each suit. (H13 S13 D13 C13). Worth 80 points.
  • Kings abound: All 8 kings. (H13 H13 S13 S13 D13 D13 C13 C13). Worth 800 points.
  • Queens around: One queen of each suit. (H12 S12 D12 C12). Worth 60 points.
  • Queens abound: All 8 queens. (H12 H12 S12 S12 D12 D12 C12 C12). Worth 600 points.
  • Jacks around: One jack of each suit. (H11 S11 D11 C11). Worth 40 points.

Trick taking

Once melding concludes trick taking starts. The player who won the auction leads the first trick, and then the winner of each trick leads the next one. The player leading the trick can play any card they wish, but other players must follow the restrictions below:

  • You must play a card in the same suit as the lead card.
  • If you cannot play a card in suit, you must play a trump.
  • If you can neither follow suit or play a trump then you can play any card you wish
  • You must take the trick if doing so does not violate the above rules.
Example: The trump is spades. Bill leads the trick with the queen of hearts H12. Lisa has neither hearts nor spades and so can play any card from her hand. You have the ace of hearts and ten of hearts H9 H10 H14. You must play either the Ten of hearts or the ace of hearts as they are both in suit and can beat the queen of hearts. Note that you must take the trick if you can even if your partner is currently winning the trick. Mike has no hearts but has a queen of spades S12. He must trump if able and thus takes the trick with his queen.

The round ends when all 12 tricks have been taken.

Today, I’m going to compile Dua Qunoot, in its original Arabic form, as well as its transliteration in different languages such in its Latin and English form. And good news insya’Allah – I will also be coming up with transliteration in Malay as well, which you can select the ‘Translation’ Icon at the menu bar at the top right hand corner. I will also aim to cover its meaning so we can truly understand the significance and the benefits of reciting the Dua.

What is Dua Qunoot?

Dua Qunoot (Arabic: القنوت‎‎ or also known as Dua e Qunoot) is generally being recited during i’tidal or standing during the last rakaat during the Fajr (Dhuha) and Witir (Witr) prayers. The word ‘Qunoot’ derived from the the word “Qanata” which means ‘to stand in prayer with excellence and silence, and to be submissive and humble before Allah SWT‘.

It is sunnah (recommended) to supplicate with qunut in the Fajr and witr prayer, however, different mazhab has different opinions with regards to it which I’m not going to delve into that for now.

Applying In Daily Practice

In practice, the recitation of dua qunoot above-mentioned is for ma’mum or if you’re doing prayers individually (read: Allah hummah DINII fiiman hadait). However, if you’re an imam, or the person leading the prayers, you will have to replace it with “Allah hummah DINAA fiiman hadait” and apply it throughout the dua. Reason being the word “NII” (DINII) refers to yourself (me) and the word “NAA” (DINAA) refers to a group of people (us).

If you log onto the Kit Forum you will see Bob Axtell is hard at work redesigning MicroPro, and doing a new PIC ProgrammerKit 185. One small problem we are fixing now is the transistors blowing particularly if ICSP wires are shortcircuited. In Kit 149we are now using 3xBC327-40 instead of the BC558, and the SOT23 MMBT2907A transistor for the other kits.

Some users have experienced trouble installing Micropro.

SOME versions of Windows XP won't allow the DIYPACK installer to work. Bob has done some research and discovered that the handler was Win16 (1997). So for people that were completely unable to install MicroPro, Bob has come up with different versions of DIYPACK22 and DIYPACK25. NOTHING is changed except the handler itself. So at the next release and thereafter, DIYPACKs will use the Win32 Installer. This is a subtle hint that, like DOS, Microsoft is slowly dropping Win16 apps!

The USB VCP Windows drivers can be downloaded from the FTDI website at http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm. Select the driver for the Windows version you are using and the ZIP file will be downloaded. All the programmer kits use the 'FT232BM' chip.

Fixhex is a correction program for people that have C compilers that output odd number of bytes on a Hex file line. MicroPro rejects the file, and people can't use DIY Programmers as a result. This program corrects the Hex file so MicroPro can take it. (April 1, 2005)

New USB PIC Programmers - Design Philosophy Kits 149 128 & 150

March 23, 2003. We are rapidly developing three new PIC programmers using the USB port: kits 128 149 and 150.
Originally there were going to be software packages for all three but it became clear that the one software package covering all three kit would be best.

March 24 a new software package for Kit 149 is released with a hardware change needed: replace the 4.000MHz crystal by a 6.000MHz crystal. More details below. Then all 3 kits will now be operating on the same clock speed and the user interface will be the same for all three kits. The new Kit 149 software (V250303) also fixed some bugs in the previous V030303 release.

If the player pockets the last C/M of his own together with the striker leaving the queen on Board, he loses the Board by three points.     We got some good feedback on our reference guide to 1st-3rd Gen S&W Semi-Autos, so for our Wheel Gun Wednesday series I thought I’d put together a similar chart for all of the S&W revolvers. And that’s exactly what I would have done except Smith & Wesson’s revolver model numbers have all been assigned by a mad genius. Sometimes there appears to be a logical numbering system at work, but it’s applied inconsistently, and varies from one product line to the next.

    So instead of one big comprehensive chart for every Smith & Wesson revolver ever made, I’m offering this smaller bite-sized chunk: every post-1957 .38 Special and .357 Magnum revolver from S&W that officially entered full-scale production.

    Why 1957? That’s the year when S&W switched over to assigning model numbers to each revolver rather than identifying them only by unique names (e.g., “Registered Magnum” or “Combat Masterpiece”). The nicknames still remained in many cases, but they could refer to a family or series of revolvers with similar characteristics.

    In the charts below, I’ve grouped the models by frame size and then by series. Where possible, I’ve listed the defining features of each series. Aplikasi excel data gereja gratis.     Series Name: Some of these names were used in the actual S&W catalog but others are just nicknames. S&W stopped using some of these names, even when production of the model continued.     Frame Material: S&W has used a variety of metals to construct their revolvers over the years but the frames all have been either steel or a lightweight aluminum alloy.     Model Number: The model number assigned to the product without any prefixes or suffixes (with the exception of the “Plus” model L-frames).

    Sights: Sights can be fixed or adjustable. The fixed sights are generally a ramp style front sight with a gutter in the top strap to form the rear sight. S&W has used a variety of adjustable rear sights over the years, but most have a removable blade insert. Front sights on models with the adjustable rear can be the traditional ramp style machined into the barrel, but newer front sights are pinned, and can be removed and replaced with aftermarket front sights.

    Finish: For the sake of simplicity, I’ve only used the labels “black” or “stainless” on the chart. Black can refer to a matte black finish or a glossy blue finish. Older models with a blue finish were often also available with a shiny nickel plated finish. Stainless can refer to the polished or matte stainless steel revolvers, or alloy revolvers with a silver matte finish that mimics the stainless steel look.

    Ammo Capacity: All J-frame .38 Special and .357 magnum revolvers have a five-round capacity. K-frames all have six. L-frames can hold six or seven shots depending on the model. Older N-frame designs have a six-round capacity but the newer ones hold eight.

    Other Info: I’ve tried to keep the chart as complete as possible while still being readable. That said, there is still information you won’t be able to find here. The most significant omission is barrel length. Almost every model has been offered in multiple barrel lengths at some point but availability varies. The more common barrel lengths are listed in the summary for each frame size.

    I also haven’t listed the variants available for each model. If a model number contains a suffix like “PD” or “Lady Smith”, it might mean that it has features that distinguish it from other models in the same series. Here’s an incomplete list of the more common variants and some other suffixes you might see on model numbers:

    • PD: “Personal Defense”. Usually indicates Scandium alloy frame.
    • Sc: Indicates frame with Scandium Alloy.
    • Ti: Titanium Cylinder. Usually accompanied by Scandium alloy frame.
    • Lady Smith: Name given to a number of variants in different calibers and frame sizes. Usually accompanied by special grips and engraving.
    • Airweight: Indicates an Aluminum alloy frame.
    • Airlite: Indicates a Scandium alloy frame.
    • Night Guard (NG): Series introduced in 2008 with models in various calibers and frame sizes. All have a 2.5-inch barrel, alloy frame, steel cylinder, Tritium front sight, and a removable Cylinder and Slide brand fixed rear sight.

    J-Frame

    The J-frame S&W revolver has become so ubiquitous that the term is often used as a generic reference to almost any small frame snub nosed revolver. The most common barrel length for a J-frame is 1 ⅞” but 3-inch models are also plentiful along with some other less common sizes.

    J-Frame model numbers are determined by frame material, hammer/action type, and finish. Unlike K and L frame revolvers, S&W doesn’t use a separate model number for J-frames with adjustable versus fixed sights.

    A few J-frame models started out as being offered in only .38 special, but in the mid-1990s, were beefed up to handle .357 magnum. I’ve included each of these multi-caliber models as two separate entries in the chart.

    The three major J-frame model series are as follows:

    • Chief’s special: Standard hammer. Most have fixed sights but a few have been offered with adjustable sights.
    • Bodyguard: The original S&W Bodyguard. They include a hammer shroud with a small protrusion that allows the user to cock the hammer for single action shots.
    • Centennial: This is the name generally given to all “hammerless” S&W revolvers. They aren’t literally hammerless, but the hammer is completely internal, which means these revolvers can only be fired in double action.

    World War II Army Enlistment Records provide a rich source of information for genealogists and other researchers at the National Archives and Records Adminstration interested in Army enlistees in World War II. Since their release through NARA's Access to Archival Databases (AAD) resource in May 2004, they have quickly become the most popular series of electronic records accessible through that resource.

    AAD, as the first installment of NARA's Electronic Records Archives (ERA) program, is leading the way to providing improved access to NARA's rich holdings of electronic records. In the first year, thousands of AAD users performed more than 700,000 queries against the enlistment records file alone. With 9.2 million records for enlistments in the Army, Enlisted Reserve Corps, and Women's Army Auxiliary Corps, this should come as little surprise.

    In addition to genealogists, individuals who served in the war (and their children and grandchildren) are using the records to document military service.

    The enlistment records are one of 45 series of electronic records currently available on AAD. Those series contain more than 85 million historic electronic records created by more than 20 federal agencies on a wide range of topics. The enlistment records complement other World War II–era electronic records in AAD, including the Records of Duty Locations for Naval Intelligence Personnel, Records About Japanese Americans Relocated During World War II, and Records of World War II Prisoners of War.

    This article provides information about how the enlistment file came to be in AAD, along with some tips and pointers for finding records in the file.

    Preparing the Records for Access in AAD

    The story of the electronic World War II Army Enlistment Record file begins with the disastrous July 12, 1973, fire at NARA's National Personnel Records Center for Military Personnel Records (NPRC). The fire destroyed approximately 16–18 million Official Military Personnel Files, including the records of approximately 80 percent of U.S. Army personnel discharged between November 1, 1912, and January 1, 1960. Following the fire, NPRC staff began identifying various series of records in NARA's custody that could assist them in reconstructing the lost basic service data. With these alternative sources, they could verify military service and provide a Certification of Military Service.

    Among the sources identified was a series of 16mm microfilm of computer punch cards titled 'Microfilm Copy of the Army Serial Number File, 1938–1946.' The Personnel Services Support Division of the Adjutant General's Office had created the microfilm in 1947, and NARA accessioned it in 1959. The original punch cards, which contained basic information about enlistees at the time they entered Army service, were destroyed after microfilming, a common practice at that time. The NPRC began using a copy of the microfilm, but it presented some challenges. First, there were 1,586 rolls of microfilm, making manual review very difficult. Second, the punch cards were microfilmed in serial number order, making a search by name impossible. Third, a variety of punch card formats were used to record the enlistment data over time, and documentation of the various recording formats was hard to identify.

    A goal of the NPRC was to have as many of the reconstructed records available to its staff electronically to speed response time to its over one million annual requestors. In 1992, NPRC contacted NARA's Center for Electronic Records seeking some assistance with these challenges.

    The Center's director was familiar with the Bureau of the Census's Film Optical Sensing Device for Input to Computers (FOSDIC) system and its successful use in processing the 1960 through 1990 decennial censuses. Census returns, which were essentially 'bubble' forms where answers were supplied by blacking out the appropriate circle, were microfilmed, and then FOSDIC extracted the answers from the image. Since the Bureau of the Census had already modified the original FOSDIC to process a series of 300 million microfilmed punch cards containing weather data, it responded affirmatively to the challenge presented by NARA.

    The Bureau of the Census completed the project during federal fiscal year 1994 on time and below budget. They successfully converted 1,374 of the 1,586 rolls, or 87 percent of the rolls of microfilm. The 212 remaining rolls containing approximately 1.5 million punch cards could not be converted because the card images were so dark that the scanner produced few, or no, usable records. In July 1994, the Bureau of the Census provided NARA with 1,374 data files (one per converted roll) on twelve 3480-class tape cartridges. NPRC received copies of the files, and they worked with Center for Electronic Records staff to identify the relevant War Department Technical Manuals containing technical documentation for the punch cards. Additional code tables and documentation continue to be identified among NARA's vast textual records holdings from World War II.

    The unique characteristic of the files created by the Bureau of the Census was that FOSDIC read each punch card image up to 10 times in an attempt to create a clean record and extract all characters from the original punch card. Usually, the first read would contain the majority of data extracted from the card image. If all data could not be extracted, subsequent reads of the card image would result in additional records containing periods for characters successfully read on previous reads and alphanumeric characters for those interpreted on the current read. Varying interpretations of the same character may have occurred across the multiple reads. A blank record separates records or groups of records pertaining to an individual punch card image. Each file also contained a header record indicating the box and microfilm roll number and an end of file record. In cases where FOSDIC could not interpret any information from a punch card or series of punch cards within a file, FOSDIC inserted a record indicating 'ONE OR MORE RECORDS WERE UNREADABLE AT THIS LOCATION.'

    These features presented challenges to the NPRC because the alphanumeric data were spread over multiple records, making it hard to use and interpret. The large number of files still presented a logistical problem for identifying and searching for individuals, especially given the computer technology of that time. During the 1990s, NPRC collected code books and began an analysis of the records while NARA's St. Louis Data Systems Center created early edit programs in an attempt to merge best guesses into one record. Given the complexities of the files, however, and the limited ability to search and locate individual records, NARA undertook no additional processing of the electronic version of the 'Microfilm Copy of the Army Serial Number File, 1938–1946.'

    That is, until 2002. In that year, staff took another look at the languished project, primarily because of the newly developed Access to Archival Databases (AAD) resource. They determined that to get the records ready for AAD, the project should be approached in two phases. The first phase involved 'merging' the 1,374 files into 12 files, corresponding to the number of computer tape cartridges provided by the Bureau of the Census. You manage to escape and end up taking part in a cross-country race called The Run where you can win millions of dollars.

    The production values in this story are through the roof. The voice acting is great and overall, the game just looks like a million bucks. I was seriously blown away by how good this game looked when it was first released and I feel that it holds up pretty well to this day.

    One of the most interesting aspects about Need for Speed: The Run is that you are not just racing around a track and doing laps. Instead, you are going from point A to B. The thing is the game throws a ton of stuff your way as you race. One time you might just need to finish in first place, another you might need to knock other racers out of the race and another you might be on the run from the cops or the mob! The game does a fantastic job of keeping each race in the game interesting and different.

    The core gameplay is fine. If you have played the previous game, you know what to expect. This is arcade-style racing and it is fun, but this is one of the more challenging games in the series and you will certainly have to retry many of the races.

    No Limit Texas Hold’em. Sometimes called the cadillac of Poker, Texas Hold ‘em is a fairly easy game to learn but can take years to master.

    How to Play

    To begin every player gets two pocket cards. A deck of cards is placed in the middle of the table and these are known as community deck and these are the cards that the flop will be dealt from.
    Once all players have been dealt their initial two cards players will be asked to place their first bid. Once all players have placed their first bid a second round of bidding occurs.
    Once all players have placed their final bids, the dealer will deal the flop. The dealer will flip over the first 3 cards, known as the “flop”, from the community deck. The goal is to make the best 5 card had you can with the three cards from the community deck and the two in your hand.
    Once the first three cards have been flipped over, player will have the option to bid again or fold. After all players have had a chance to bid or fold, the dealer will flip over a fourth card known as a “turn” card.
    The players still remaining will have the option to once again fold or bid. Now the dealer will flip the 5th and final card over, known as the “river”card.
    Once all five cards have been flipped by the dealer, players will have one last chance to raise the bid or fold. Once all bids and count bids have been made it’s time for the players to reveal their hands and determine a winner.

    First Round Betting: The Pre-Flop

    When playing Texas hold ‘em a round flat chip or “disk” is used to represent the position of the dealer. This disk is placed in front of the dealer to indicate their status. The person sitting to dealer left is known as the small blind and the person sitting to the left of the small blind is known as the big blind.
    When betting, both blinds are required to post a bet before receiving any cards. The big blind is required to post the equivalent or higher of the bet placed by the small blind. Once both blinds have posted their bids two cards are dealt to each player and remaining players can choose to fold, call, or raise. After the end of the game the dealer button is moved to the left so that every player takes on the blind position at some point to maintain the fairness of the game.
    Fold – The action of surrendering your cards to the dealer and sitting out the hand. If one folds their cards in the first round of betting, they lose no money.
    Call – The action of matching the table bet, which is the most recent bet that has been placed on the table.
    Raise – The action of doubling the amount of the most recent bet.
    The small and the big blind have the option to fold, call, or raise before the first round of betting ends. If either of them choose to fold, they will lose the blind bet that they initially placed.

    Second Round Betting: The Flop

    After the first round of betting ends the dealer will proceed to deal the flop. Once the flop has been dealt, players will access the strength of their hands. Again, the player to the left of the dealer is the first to act.
    Since there is no compulsory bet on the table, the first player has the option to to take the three previous options discussed, call, fold, raise, as well as the option to check. To check, a player taps his hand twice on the table, this allows the player to pass the option to make the first bet on to the player to his left. All players have the option to check until a bet has been placed on the table. Once a bet has been placed, players must choose to either fold, call, or raise.

    Third & Fourth Round Betting: The Turn & The River

    After the second round of betting closes, the dealer will deal the fourth card of the flop, known as the turn card. The player to dealer left has the option to check or place a bet. The player that opens the bet closes the bet, after all other players have chosen to fold, raise, or call.
    The dealer will then add the bets to the existing pot and deal a fifth card known as “The River”. Once this card has been dealt, the remaining players have the option to check,fold, call, or raise. Lets say all players decide to check. If that is the case it is time for all remaining players to reveal there cards and determine the winner. The player with the highest ranking hand is the winner. They receive the full pot and a new game begins.

    Ties

    In the chance of a tie between hands the following tie-breakers are used:

    Pairs– if two players are tied for highest pairs a “kicker” or the next highest-ranking card is used to determine the winner. You continue until one player has a higher-ranking card or both are determined to have the same exact hand, in which case the pot is split.

    Two pairs– in this tie, the higher ranked pair wins, if top pairs are equal in rank you move to the next pair, then move to kickers if necessary.

    Three of a kind – higher ranking card takes the pot.

    Straights – the straight with the highest-ranking card wins; if both straights are the same the pot is split.

    Flush – The flush with the highest-ranking card wins, if the same you move to the next card till a winner is found or hands are the same. If hands are the same split the pot.
